What are surface coatings?
Surface coatings encompass a wide variety or water-based epoxies, polyurethanes or other materials used to coat the surface layer of the concrete to provide a high quality, extremely durable floor or wall finish. They typically withstand abuse, chemicals, mold, and temperature much better than basic concrete. Suitable for interior and exterior use, these high performance coatings exhibit outstanding durability, color/gloss retention and can be applied in all climates.

PROS AND CONS
Surface Traction
No-Slip coatings or additives can be used to provide added traction over traditional troweled or polished concrete finishes and sealants.
Durability
Most surface coatings provide superior abrasion, impact, wear, chemical, and stain resistance over traditional sealants or unfinished concrete. Coatings will also resist mold, bacteria and fungal growth more effectively. Some variants are also resistant to incidental heat contact and, with proper application and care, hot tire pickup can be avoided.
Hot tire pickup can occur when hot car tires cool while in contact with a low quality or poorly applied concrete surface coating. With some materials, this can cause the coating to peel off the floor, requiring replacement or repair.
Affordability
Premium surface coatings come at an additional cost over troweled or brushed concrete finishes. Contact us at Rivard Concrete to get a free estimate on your project.
Design Variety
Most surface coatings comes in a variety of gloss and color options. Talk to one of our experts to get more information on what options are available through our supplier.
